About NSHL
We are an active and diverse group offering activities for children and youth of all ages, as well as support for ourselves as homeschooling parents. Some of the great activities and events our members enjoy include:
Newsletter - Our monthly newsletter is our primary mode of communicating announcements and NSHL events. Here you'll find information about events and activities for the current month.
Monthly Support Group Meetings - Usually offered in the evening, meetings are a time for Moms and Dads to get together and "talk shop". We include time for chatting and networking, as well as a topic for more focused discussion. Some popular past discussion topics have included "Parenting and Positive Discipline", and "Trying to Do It All: The Myth of the Perfect Homechooler". If you have a great idea for a monthly meeting topic, let us know!
Field Trips - Field trips are limited only by your own imagination! Past trips have included Apple-Picking and Maple Sugaring, excursions to Chinatown and Boston's Public Garden, and overnight trips to a Vermont dairy farm and Connecticut's Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center.
Wonderful Weekdays - Recent Wonderful Weekdays have included Park Days, Favorite Book Fair, Heritage Day, a 100th Day party, History Fair, Science Fair and a monthly Games Day. Come share a terrific activity with the group!
Book Groups - We have a book group for 10-14 year olds and a second group for 7-10 year olds. Both Children's Book Groups meet monthly in a local library children's room and are run cooperatively.
Community Service Opportunities - NSHL members enjoy participating in Community Service activities. We've entertained residents of a local nursing home with Talent Shows, Trick-or-Treated for UNICEF, had bake sales for the Citizen's Energy fund, and organized collections for food pantries and Toys For Tots. Join us in supporting worthy causes - and have a lot of family fun in the process!
Holiday Parties - Who could forget some of our great parties? This year's Halloween bash was the best yet! Don't miss the Valentine and End of Year Pool Party, as well as our annual Not-Back-To-School-Picnic.
And more - Terrific activities like Gym & Swim and Nature Study Group take place throughout the year and all ages are welcome. If you are looking for "age specific" activities we invite you to join in on our PreK Communities group ( for the 6 and under crowd), the 11-14 year old Activity Night or the 13+ Activity Night. If you are new to homeschooling or still considering your options, please join us for one of our homeschool information nights which are held twice yearly at local libraries.
Everyone is encouraged to become involved; we rely on group efforts and volunteerism to keep things exciting and fun for all. New ideas are always welcome!
